UNHCR’s #RefugiArte Exhibit will be touring Belize
20 June 2018
The exhibit showed support for families who have been forced and still are being forced to flee their homes because of violence and other forms of persecution.
On June 20th, 2018, World Refugee Day, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, in collaboration with the Ministry with responsibility for Immigration and Refugees, and the Mexican Embassy in Belize, ceremoniously inaugurated the exhibition #RefugiArte at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Belize City.
World Refugee Day is the day the world honors the strength, courage, and perseverance of millions of refugees around the globe. The commemoration of that day also marks an opportunity for the public to show support for families who have been forced and still are being forced to flee their homes because of violence and other forms of persecution.
The #RefugiArte exhibition is composed of illustrations from artists in Latin America, who have created their art works on the topic of persons being forced to flee their homes and cross borders to seek safety. The exhibit also contains a work from an artist in Belize, whose parents came to Belize as refugees.
The #RefugiArte exhibit has been on display at the Mexican Institute for over eight weeks, attracting many visitors from Belize City and beyond. In the evening of Wednesday 22nd August 2018 the exhibit was formally closed and will now travel around the country. With the enthusiastic support from the National Institute for Culture and History (NICH), #RefugiArte will be on display in the Houses of Culture in the main towns of Belize, starting on Friday 7th September at the House of Culture in San Ignacio, followed by Benque, Orange Walk, Corozal, Dangriga, San Pedro and ultimately Belmopan.
The #RefugiArte exhibit is expected to have its final showing toward April 2019.
