As we all know Belize attained independence on September 21st, 1981. Thereafter, Belize then applied for membership to the United Nations by a telegram of the same date and acting on the Council’s recommendation as transmitted by its President in a letter, the General Assembly admitted Belize on September 25th
Here we are 40 years later working fruitfully with the People and Government of Belize, especially at this most crucial time. The United Nations and Belize share a longstanding strategic relationship with strong cooperation on our shared priorities of democracy, prosperity, sustainable development, gender equality, no poverty, climate action, peace and security, human rights, and the rule of law.
This past year has brought many challenges for everyone across the globe. We are pleased to have been able to support the government and people of Belize in efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. As well as ongoing efforts to consult and prepare a new Cooperation Framework with the ambition of accelerating action on sustainable development issues to advance the well-being of the people of Belize within this decade of action. I am confident that by working together, we will see a brighter future and an even stronger partnership.
This year’s theme “Belize at 40: Hopeful Hearts, Steady Hands; Together We Rise” not only highlights the positive culture of Belize and its people but provides a message of solidarity as only together united in purpose can we succeed.
During the months ahead, the United Nations Country Team in Belize welcomes the people of Belize to stay in touch. Follow us on social media, send us your questions on our programmes and initiatives.
